Know Your Wood and Finish
Is your table oiled, lacquered, shellacked, polyurethane-sealed, or waxed? Each finish responds differently to moisture and soaps. Perform a small, hidden spot test, observe sheen and resistance, and choose neutral, gentle methods. Knowing the finish prevents over-wetting, hazing, or stripping, which saves resources and preserves the piece longer.
Know Your Wood and Finish
Wood dislikes extremes. Highly alkaline or acidic cleaners can dull finishes and etch protective coatings, while too much water swells fibers. Use distilled water to reduce mineral spotting, keep cloths barely damp, and always dry immediately. Balanced, mild solutions protect beauty and reduce the need for intensive restoration later.
